Celebrate Chelmsford Parks Day!

Chelmsford City Council have allocated an entire to celebrate how much parks matter to us. This includes a mixture of activities to highlight Chelmsford green spaces and their mix of users!

We’re celebrating Chelmsford Parks Day on Friday 27th July by hosting a pebble painting activity at The Meadows. #celebrateparkschelmsford

This wonderful new craze sees people painting stones, hiding them across their villages, towns and cities for others to find, as beautiful, surprising and creative gifts!

We’ll be encouraging you to visit central park after you’ve shopped at the centre to hide your stone, participate in the other activities, and who knows maybe discover another stone in the process too!

We’ll be hosting hourly workshops in the centre 10am – 5pm  that anyone can join in with.

Running the workshop is local artist Angelique Samadi, we spoke to Angelique ahead of the activity to find a little more about it what parks day is about!

  • What made you want to be involved in Chelmsford Parks Day?

As soon as I was approached and told about the project, to teach people how  to create a mandala design onto a rock and then they take it to the Chelmsford Park,  I loved it and was so keen to take part, to help encourage people to visit their local parks, maybe for the first time or the first time in a while to see how beautiful they are and how peaceful and tranquil they are.

  • Have you always had an interest in art and painting?

Art was my favourite subject at school, something regrettably that I did not continue.  But I always enjoyed doing something arty; I took up calligraphy in my twenties.  I always enjoyed colours and design and regularly visited art galleries and photographic shows.  But it took until my fifties for the artist bursting to get out found creative outlets.  It started with photography and progressed onto making plaques and starting my own business called “Purple Pansy Personalised Plaques”.  I attended fetes and sold them plus my nature, flower photo cards that I took and made, some with my favourite quotes on them.

I have always loved mandala stones and a couple of years ago started teaching myself; I adore all the colours and patterns that can be made.

  • How important do you think it is that we go outside regularly to enjoy our local parks?

I think it is very important indeed and something everyone should try to do every week or more: parks provide clean air to breathe, are brilliant for mental health – reducing stress and increasing happiness; they are so peaceful and you get to connect with nature and see all the trees, plants and flowers; it’s such a great place for kids to be outside and away from social media and play stations/gaming; you can even try taking your socks of and walking bare foot on the grass!

  • Where is your favourite place to go in Chelmsford?

My husband and I enjoy immensely walking in the park along the river it’s such a lovely walk under the canopies of trees and seeing all the large open spaces, flowers, plants and wild life, its very beautiful.

The pebble decorating activity is FREE and open to everyone. There will be 5 sessions during the day,
